Deep learning and machine learning are hot topics! Everyone is talking about them, regardless of whether or not they know the differences. These terms are common, regardless of whether you've been involved in data science.
Over the past thousands of years, human evolution has gone through many stages. We have moved from Hunter to Agrarian, Industrial to a Services-oriented society in Fast Forward mode. What does this have to do with this write-up?
Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are the next revolution, according to me. AI will drive a significant shift in all aspects of our lives. Does this mean that humans will all be jobless, and that machines will take control like a scene from a sci-fi Hollywood movie.
The answer to that question is "No". AI does not mean all machines will do the same thing, but rather "Augmented Intelligence", which is a better representation of AI. Man+Machine can solve business problems faster and better than ever before.
WHAT IS MACHINE LEARNING?
Tom Mitchell's widely quoted definition of Machine Learning best describes machine learning. Here's the summary:
"A computer program can learn from experience E in relation to a class of tasks T and performance measures P if its performance on tasks in T is improved by experience E."
What is deep learning?
Deep learning isn't a new concept. Deep learning has been around for some time. Deep learning is getting more attention due to all the hype. We will use Machine Learning as an example to show you how we have broken down Deep Learning.
Deep learning is a special type of machine learning. It learns to represent the world in a nested hierarchy, each concept being defined in relation to simpler concepts and more abstract representations that are computed using less abstract concepts.
WHAT WORKS IN DEEP LEARNING?
This is how deep learning works:
* The first thing it does is identify the most important edges to determine if a Cat or Dog are present.
* This then works in a hierarchical fashion to determine the best combination of edges and shapes. It can tell, for example, if whiskers or ears are present.
It then determines which features are responsible for determining the answer after a series of hierarchical identifications of complex concepts.
DATA DEPENDENCIES
The main difference between deep learning algorithms and traditional machine-learning is the performance of deep learning as data grows. Deep learning algorithms are unable to perform well when the data is very small. Deep learning algorithms require large amounts of data to fully understand the data. In this situation, however, traditional machine-learning algorithms with their handcrafted rules win. This is illustrated in the below image.
