This is the script for the stage play which has been adapted for and inspired the forthcoming sensational new film ‘The Archbishop and the Antichrist’, to star Forest Whitaker (Last King of Scotland Oscar winner) and directed by Roland Joffë (The Mission and The Killing Fields).
The stage play has won an Amnesty International award and the Gold prize on a national UK award and has been seen on stage at The Royal Festival Hall, London, the Amnesty International Theatre, London, and Soho Theatre, London.
1996, South Africa, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has been sitting for two years, hearing testimony from more than twenty thousand people concerning the part they played in the atrocities committed during the Apartheid era or else hearing the victims stories. The Commission is neutral as to race and colour but its Chairman, the world renowned Nobel prize winner Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is plagued by a crisis of faith and conscience in having to grant amnesty to people guilty of perpetrating some of the most heinous crimes ever committed by man. He cannot sleep and is troubled by nightmares. Having unwisely promised the grief stricken family of a prominent victim who has been ‘disappeared’ he will find the truth for them, he is contacted by a bigoted white Afrikaner serial killer who is languishing in Pollsmoor Prison Cape Town just one week from his execution. The brutal arch-racist AWB Piet Blomfeld is a former member of a security forces kill squad and when he writes to Archbishop Tutu offering vital information on the very case Tutu has made promises on, there follows a series of meetings between the two men in the prison, during the course of which the ghastly truth emerges, and, more importantly, Tutu and Blomfeld together find their way back to faith and true reconciliation. Together they find their own respective redemption and learn to forgive.
