Getting Started: Supplies You'll Need

Before we dive into the crochet pattern, let's gather the necessary supplies:

  1. 1 skein of soft, lightweight yarn in your desired color
  2. Crochet hook (size will depend on the thickness of your yarn)
  3. Elastic band
  4. Scissors
  5. Measuring tape

Once you have all the supplies ready, let's move on to the actual crochet pattern.

Step 1: Creating the Waistband

To start, measure the waist of the person who will be wearing the tutu skirt. Add an extra inch to this measurement to ensure a comfortable fit. This additional inch will account for the stretch in the elastic band.

Taking your elastic band, cut it to the measurement you calculated in the previous step. Remember to leave the extra inch for the overlap. Once cut, overlap the ends of the elastic band and secure them together with a few stitches using your needle and thread. This will form the waistband of the skirt.

Step 2: Starting the Crochet Pattern

Now that you have the waistband ready, it's time to start crocheting. Attach your yarn to the elastic band with a slipknot. Make sure the knot is secure and tight enough to hold the yarn in place.

Next, chain the desired number of stitches around the waistband. The number of stitches will depend on the size of the skirt you want to create. For example, if you are making a skirt for a toddler, you can start with 80–90 chains, while an adult skirt may require 150–200 chains.

After chaining the desired number of stitches, join the last stitch to the first one with a slip stitch. This will create a round shape for the skirt.

Step 3: Crocheting the Skirt

Now that you have the foundation set, it's time to crochet the actual skirt. In this step, we will use a combination of double crochet (dc) and chain stitches to create a beautiful and airy pattern.

Start by chaining three, which will act as the first double crochet stitch. Then, double crochet into the next stitch. Chain one stitch and skip the next stitch. Repeat this pattern of one double crochet, one chain, and skipping one stitch until you reach the end of the round.

In the second round, start by chaining three again and make a double crochet into the first stitch. Then, double crochet into the chain one space from the previous round. Chain one stitch and double crochet again into the next chain one space. Repeat this pattern until you reach the end of the round.

Continue repeating the second round until you reach the desired length for your tutu skirt.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Once you have reached the desired length, it's time to finish off your tutu skirt. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Using your crochet hook, pull the tail through the last loop and tighten it to secure the stitch.

Finally, weave in any loose ends and trim them with scissors.

Accessorize to Complete the Look!

Now that you have created your very own tutu skirt, you can customize it by adding some additional elements. Consider attaching ribbons, flowers, or even beads to give your skirt a unique and personalized touch.

Remember, the beauty of crochet is that you can let your creativity run wild. Feel free to experiment with different colors, stitches, and patterns to create a truly one-of-a-kind tutu skirt.

In this article, we have provided a comprehensive and easy-to-follow tutorial for crafting a stunning tutu skirt crochet pattern. By following the step-by-step instructions and using the recommended supplies, you can create a beautiful piece that is sure to turn heads.

So, grab your supplies, unleash your inner creativity, and get ready to embark on this exciting crochet project. Whether it's for yourself, a loved one, or a little princess, a handmade tutu skirt is a fantastic way to show off your crochet skills and create a cherished keepsake for years to come.

This tutu pattern doesn't fit into the 'quick project' category, but it is definitely in the 'easy' one because despite the fact that it looks like a more complicated project, I have written it so that crocheters of all skills can achieve a great result.
The yarn used is very fine - Lace weight (2 ply) - but don't let that put you off. It works up quite quickly with the H / 8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook to produce a beautiful light-as-air tutu skirt which will be adored by little girls (and the grown up girls too!). The simple instructions are in a single size, but the waist measurement and skirt length are easily modified to fit the child perfectly.
My patterns are written in plain English which makes them easy to follow whether you are a newbie crocheter or you have many years of experience.
